The first thing to understand is that market research providers have different services. This article focuses on the first three types: off-the-self market reports, market data & market intelligence, and reselling of third-party market reports. Some companies also have consulting services as an additional service for their product range, but we excluded companies that primarily offer consulting services, such as management consulting firms.

Types of services by market research providers:

Off-the-shelf market reports: Market reports on specific sectors are usually updated annually, for sale as a complete report or (sometimes) in part per section. Often a preview page or the index/summary of contents is available to review if the report covers your needs. There is the ability to buy reports individually and sometimes negotiate the price - especially for older reports.

Market data & market intelligence: Market data is presented in tables and figures with market size, growth, segmentation, and competitor data points. The service is often offered as a subscription to access an online portal to view and select the areas of interest.

Reselling third-party market reports: This activity consists of reselling off-the-shelf market research reports already published by other research firms. They are not necessarily more expensive than buying directly from the source publisher as the reseller will get a revenue share from the publisher where the publisher is saving expenditures on reach/marketing costs.

Consulting services: Bespoke consulting services about market intelligence. It is often a project-based engagement with a tailormade scope of work and throughput time of weeks.


An important note concerning market data: As it is often difficult to get actual data points on each market area, market research companies often complement factual, quantitative data with estimations for the missing data to still present you with complete tables and charts and segmentations. In recent years, with the help of more sophisticated algorithms and data science/A.I. and inputs from industry experts, these estimations have become more and more reliable. However, it is still relevant to be conscious of the referenced sources used for actual factual data and be extra cautious if references are not explicitly mentioned.

Kantar is a London-based data analytics and brands consulting firm. With 30 years in business, they have built a good reputation by serving clients worldwide. Like Nielsen, Kantar provides a wide range of products and services such as business solutions and consultancy.

Sector coverage: Kantar has global coverage with offices in 74 countries, 35,667 employees (Jun 2022), and $911 million of revenues in the first quarter of 2022.

Gartner is a technological research and consulting company based in the U.S. Established in 1979, the company has many years of experience conducting market research on technology. Their data and insights are shared through private consulting, executive programs, and conferences.

Sector coverage: Gartner has global coverage with 90+ offices, 16,600 associates (Dec 2021), and a 4.73 billion dollar revenue.

Services description: Although Gartner covers various industries (Education; Energy & Utilities; Financial Services; Government & Public Sectors; Healthcare; High Tech & Telecom; Investment Service; Manufacturing; Retails), the company is famous for its technology focus. Gartner provides a good selection of A.I. tools to help clients make decisions, such as Hype Cycles, Magic Quadrant, Critical Capabilities, Digital I.Q., Product Decisions, and BuySmart.

Coverage (⭐⭐): Global. Gartner covers a broad array of topics relating to the I.T. sector. However, some argue that their research lacks niche depth information or data.

Another consumer-focused research company: Ipsos is mainly known for its online media (Audience Measurement) and consumer behaviour (Customer Experience, Mystery Shopping) research.

Similar to other "major players" in this field, Ipsos is an international market research and consulting firm. The company is ranked in the Top 50 Most Innovative Market Research Companies.

Sector coverage: Ipsos has ten offices, with headquarters in France and nine other offices in the USA. Ipsos has 18,622 employees and 2.15 billion euros in revenues (2021).

Traditional networks easily charge clients more than €1,000 per expert interview and pay only around €200 to the experts. “Experts often don’t know this, and we think it is fundamentally unsustainable as the experts are really the ones providing the knowledge.”, says Huisman. Expertwired pays out experts on average €400 per interview, but experts always choose their own rate. This makes Expertwired the highest paying platform for experts globally, whilst clients – who pay a mark-up of 20% platform fee – are always better off than through alternative ‘low-tech’ networks. Huisman: “To experts, it’s not all about earnings. We’ve built our technology in such a way that experts on-board in minutes and determine their own hourly rate. We pre-fill their professional experience automatically and enable them to accept or decline incoming opportunities in a few clicks. Straightforward and easy.”

The current round was led by Pop Up Qapital, the new angel syndicate from serial investor Quintin Schevernels (former CEO of Funda). Other individual angels in this investment round include Jurgen van Dijk, Ruud van Hoek (founders Stepstone Corporate Finance), Patrick Stal (ex-N26, Uber, TomTom), and continued participation from existing investor MB Capital.
