The complete list of market research report providers (2022 updated)

If you are reading this article, chances are you are doing market research and have started looking if some industry market reports are available that would fit your needs. If so, please keep reading. We have created this article to help you find your way faster.

By now, you have Googled around and possibly found some links to market research companies. But have you seen all the market reports, or are there more? And how do the costs and quality compare to other research companies offering market reports? And what to do if you cannot quickly find the best matching market report for your needs?

Market research reports are not easy purchases since they often cover specific market segments that might - or might not - answer your research needs. Since they are usually expensive, it is worth understanding what is out there and possibly fits your needs. Therefore, we created this overview to help you find the best places to find market reports and how they compare on critical criteria such as price level, sector coverage and quality.

Your first stop for finding market research

Our list tries to be the most comprehensive directory of market research providers for market reports and market research intelligence solutions, and we are updating it regularly.

Each company listed is rated on a set of criteria based on publicly found reviews and publicly available facts. The companies' order is based on the type and subsequently on the provider's scale (revenue if known, or site visits as proxy) and does not indicate a preference or quality. The rating criteria are explained at the bottom of the article.

The first thing to understand is that market research providers have different services. This article focuses on the first three types: off-the-self market reports, market data & market intelligence, and reselling of third-party market reports. Some companies also have consulting services as an additional service for their product range, but we excluded companies that primarily offer consulting services, such as management consulting firms.

Types of services by market research providers:

  • Off-the-shelf market reports: Market reports on specific sectors are usually updated annually, for sale as a complete report or (sometimes) in part per section. Often a preview page or the index/summary of contents is available to review if the report covers your needs. There is the ability to buy reports individually and sometimes negotiate the price - especially for older reports.
  • Market data & market intelligence: Market data is presented in tables and figures with market size, growth, segmentation, and competitor data points. The service is often offered as a subscription to access an online portal to view and select the areas of interest.
  • Reselling third-party market reports: This activity consists of reselling off-the-shelf market research reports already published by other research firms. They are not necessarily more expensive than buying directly from the source publisher as the reseller will get a revenue share from the publisher where the publisher is saving expenditures on reach/marketing costs.
  • Consulting services: Bespoke consulting services about market intelligence. It is often a project-based engagement with a tailormade scope of work and throughput time of weeks.

An important note concerning market data
: As it is often difficult to get actual data points on each market area, market research companies often complement factual, quantitative data with estimations for the missing data to still present you with complete tables and charts and segmentations. In recent years, with the help of more sophisticated algorithms and data science/A.I. and inputs from industry experts, these estimations have become more and more reliable. However, it is still relevant to be conscious of the referenced sources used for actual factual data and be extra cautious if references are not explicitly mentioned.

Here is the exciting part: The List!

6. Statista

Statista provides a wide range of industry-specific data, and it's easy to find snapshot sample data of their coverage of various markets. However, Statista's data is not always perceived as very reliable because of the sometimes high degree of 'generated' data and lack of publicly stated sources. It's worth mentioning that this perception is possibly sticking longer to their brand name than fair to them, given the company has improved its data sources vastly since their early years.

What do we get from this?

From the list above, we can conclude a few things. Depending on your budget and how fast you would need market intelligence, there are many different options. The fastest is buying an off-the-shelf, available report, but chances are high there is not a report with a specific focus for your needs. And you would still be looking at a few thousand euros spent.

Still can't find the market reports you need?

Here you have it. Buying a market report off-the-shelf could be a perfect fit for your needs, but the most significant drawbacks of buying off-the-shelf market reports are:

  • Market reports are not tailored to your individual needs as they are published to cater to a larger generic audience. The more specific your research questions, the more likely there is no off-the-shelf market report providing the answers you need.
  • The high price point of market reports, often costing thousands of euros (or dollars), remains a significant barrier.
  • Market intelligence loses value quickly. Buying a market report published last year or older is not as relevant or valuable anymore.
  • Market reports don't provide you with unique insights. Fundamentally, they are sold to a large audience, so everyone having access to them is equally educated on potential market opportunities or risks.

So what do you do if you don't have the budget to engage with a McKinsey-like company or get a bespoke project performed to get the real-time market insights you need?

Here's where we come in. At Expertwired, we connect you with industry experts (including the authors of the market reports), so you can gain first-hand and most real-time market intelligence straight from the source!

At an average of €500 per a one-hour interview with an industry expert specifically sourced and matched to your research needs - this is by far the most efficient way to access unique market insights. And if you create your search today you will be able to start interviewing your expert picks tomorrow!
